Naturally Comfortable. Exquisitely Handmade. Beautifully Sustainable.
Our pets are family. We care about the food they eat, the exercise they get, and their overall health. But how much thought do we give to where and how they sleep?
Dogs can spend 12–16 hours a day sleeping or resting, making their bed one of the most frequently used items in the home. The materials inside that bed matter just as much as the materials on the outside.
That's why we're excited to introduce the exquisite NZ Woolen Dog Bed —beautifully handcrafted in New Zealand, utilizing the many beneficial and natural properties of wool to create comfortable, supportive, and sustainable bedding for our four-legged family members.
And at the heart of every NZ Woolen Dog Bed is something rather special: “NZ woolen pearls”.
What are Woolen Pearls and What Makes them so Special?
Woolen pearls, sometimes called knopped wool, or wool knops, are wool fibers that are mechanically formed into small, rounded clusters, creating a filling with a distinctive three-dimensional structure. These little wool clusters are the secret behind the NZ Woolen Dog Beds.
Unlike layered wool batting, the individual clusters of woolen pears create a flexible, cushioned filling with spaces between them. The wool’s naturally crimped fibers temporarily compress with your dog’s weight and spring back when they move. Woolen pearls are designed to provide cushioning, maintain loft and allow air flow.
The Benefits and Science of Woolen Pearls
A natural alternative to synthetic filling
The construction of these woolen beds is done carefully, intentionally and with love and concern for your pet. Woolen pearls offer natural comfort, joint and muscle support, moisture wicking, odor reduction, and shape retention. There is absolutely no polyester fiberfill or polyurethane foam here!
We are passionate about the quality, craftsmanship, and origins of our products. Coming soon, each New Zealand Wool Dog Bed will include a personalized traceability card identifying the New Zealand farm where the knopped wool used to make that dog bed originated. This allows you to know exactly where your pet’s bed began its journey—from farm to finished bed.
What Exactly Is Inside the NZ Woolen Pet Bed:
The science behind their benefits lies in the construction:
First: Outer Layer (cover). 100% New Zealand felted wool Felting wool is dense, durable. It insulates well even when damp, and naturally resists odors. It wicks moisture. It provides a nice cushion and holds shape well.
Second layer: Muslin “inner” layer that contains the woolen pearls, is made of 100% unbleached muslin cloth, this fabric is all natural, durable and without dyes or synthetics.
Third layer: Woolen pearls, or (knopped woolen balls), they are small soft clusters of pure wool. They create a naturally springy cushioned layer. The woolen pearls trap tiny pockets of air, that provides natural insulation and helps regulate temperature. They also wick away moisture and naturally resist odors. This soft resilient structure distributes pressure and gently conforms to the body. Because wool naturally springs back after compression, the woolen pearls help the bed retain its loft, cushioning and comfort over time. It gently stimulates the body while redistributing pressure as your pet moves around.
The result is a thoughtfully constructed, structurally sound bed combining wool's natural performance with an innovative filling.
A More Sustainable Choice
Sustainability isn't simply about replacing one material with another. It's about choosing materials that make sense for their intended purpose—and considering what happens to them at the end of their useful life.
Wool has several important environmental advantages.
Renewable: Sheep naturally grow a new fleece each year.
Biodegradable: Untreated wool fibers can naturally break down under suitable conditions, unlike conventional plastic-based fibers.
Naturally resilient: Wool's elasticity supports long-lasting products when properly manufactured and cared for.
Naturally functional: Wool's breathability, moisture management, and insulating properties are inherent to the fiber itself.
By choosing wool filling instead of conventional synthetic alternatives, we can reduce our reliance on plastic-based materials while providing our pets with a healthier, comfortable and natural place to rest.
