How Tiny Choices Can Change the Planet
Ahh a New Year and a fresh start! The chance to finally get everything right. Every January the greenie within me dreams about living a perfect, zero-waste lifestyle; to have a home where every surface is perfect, every single scrap of paper, cardboard, plastic and everything else recyclable is recycled…THIS YEAR my home will be 100% natural….
That ideal may be beautiful , but that standard is unrealistic, exhausting AND stressful!
Perfection isn’t the point. Progress is. Progress happens through tiny, consistent changes that when repeated daily or weekly, make a big difference.
As James Clear wrote this in his awesome book Atomic Habits:
“Making a choice that is 1% better or 1% worse seems insignificant in the moment, but over the span of moments that make up a lifetime these choices determine the difference between who you are and who you could be.”
The Magic of Small Sustainable Changes
Big habits aren’t formed by radical overnight transformations. They’re built through experiences you repeat, not once, but again and again. That might mean bringing your reusable wrap to lunch one additional day this week, or choosing to pack your reusable water bottle. When repeated consistently, those tiny actions add up.
2026 Actionable Green Habits To Try
Here are some suggested tiny but meaningful ways you can make 2026 greener, easier, and more joyful without stress or guilt:
🌎 Pack with Purpose
Use beeswax wraps instead of cling film for lunches, snacks, and leftovers. One swap, no plastic. Immediate impact.
🌎 Bring Your Own Bottle
Carry a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bag daily.
🌎 Replace, Don’t Waste
Where possible, replace single-use items with reusable ones (For example, cutlery, straws, sandwich bags).
🌎 Mindful Movement
Choose walking or biking when feasible.
🌎 Save Water Thoughtfully
Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or take a 2 minute shower.
🌎 Declutter Plastic First
Make your next closet clean-out a plastic purge day. (Those old plastics have outlived their purpose).
🌎 Shop With Intention
Support brands committed to sustainability and transparency. Your dollars are votes for the future you want.
🌎 Share
Share your wins and experiences with a friend, maybe you will inspire them to make one tiny change too!
Remember:
Don’t add a new habit until the last one feels natural. There’s a rhythm to habit building.
